I live in a city where there is a coffee shop on nearly every street corner; it’s hard to take a stroll and not be captured by the wafting, lingering scent of brewing coffee or passing by someone with a steaming cup in hand. I’ve never though thought about where the coffee, that so affects my daily mood, comes from.
Yirgacheffee Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union represents nearly 44,000 farmers impacting 300,000 family members through 23 member cooperatives in the Gedeo zone in Southern Ethiopia. Annually, the farmers produce 10,000 tonnes of yirgacheffe, 4000 tonnes of sidamo washed coffee, and 26,000 tonnes of sun-dried coffee.
With such high volume production and being responsible to so many in the region, the Yirgacheffee Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative strives to increase each individual member’s income while helping them become self sufficient. Cooperative member support includes:
- providing coffee storage and preparation facilities
- training and educating the individual farmers and coop managers for continued quality improvement
- providing savings and loan services to members
On a recent visit to Ethiopia as a World Vision Ambassador, Hugh Jackman, or as I like to call him, Wolverine, formed a bond with a cooperative farmer-member, Dukale; through their interaction, Jackman started Laughing Man Worldwide, which markets the coffee produced by the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union.
Partnering with companies and products that believe in the ALL BE HAPPY vision, Laughing Man Worldwide supports and contributes to their entrepreneurial spirit while also donating 100% of its profits, through these ventures, to educational charities locally and abroad.
Thank you Yirgacheffee Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union and Laughing Man Worldwide for making our world wonderful!
