Over the past couple of years, TOMS shoes’ success, which introduced the one-for-one model of corporate giving – buy one pair of shoes and TOMS donates one pair to a child in need, has spurred many start-up companies to replicate the model. Most companies I’ve seen are in the fashion category, which makes ONEshot Global unique.
ONEshot Global is a non-profit started at Arizona State University (ASU) that facilitates meningitis vaccines through community partnerships to incoming freshmen and college students living in residence halls. “For every single vaccine given stateside, ONEshot will donate a vaccine to the meningitis belt of Africa. ONEshot can save two lives; one saves two.”
Declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an epidemic, meningococcal meningitis, is a communicable bacterial infection that is easily transmitted and causes inflammation of the membrane surrounding a human’s brain and spinal cord. Those infected, without immediate treatment, can die within 48 hours, while survivors may be forever impacted with learning disabilities, blindness, or nervous system damage.
Fortunately, this silent and deadly disease is fully preventable with vaccination.
With 8000 cases in the United States reported annually, and 80,000 in the Meningitis Belt in Africa, ONEshot Global’s vision is to eradicate this preventable disease through accessibility to vaccinations, education and advocacy.
Thank you ONEshot Global for making our world wonderful.
