There are many ways to make our world a better place, from the simple act of recycling or composting to raising awareness for causes close to our hearts. Organizations I find inspiring are those that achieve success through empowering others. One Earth Designs (OED), a Hong Kong based social enterprise, is one of these organizations; OED works with Himalayan communities to support socially and environmentally minded local innovation and entrepreneurship.
Founded in 2007 and based on the belief that communities are the key to their own sustainable growth, OED’s purpose is to supply them with resources needed to shape their progress in both the short and long terms. “Through the implementation of collaborative design, engineering and entrepreneurship initiatives, OED provides communities with the resources they need to achieve this own vision of environmental, social and economic progress.”
Areas of support include scientific analysis for those lacking access to laboratories and technical training, science and engineering curricula design for workshops and schools, technical and financial support for sustainable business ideas among local entrepreneurs, and collaboration to design solutions that make daily routines more efficient, healthier and more environmentally friendly.
Projects OED has designed through co-creation with community partners include:
- SolSource: a low-cost, portable solar energy device for cooking, heating and electricity generation that eliminate the hazards associated with burning solid fuels such as deadly indoor air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
- HeatSource: a clean and mobile product embedded in traditional Himalayan textiles, it captures and redistributes excess body heat during use, providing warmth as climates change, lessening the impact of community food gathering and herding routines.
- Education: OED builds schools and develops curricula that teach children sustainability through an illustrated series with stories covering how deforestation impacts water quality and the dangers of improper pesticide use on crops.
