It’s nearing the end of the year and I’m about ready for a vacation. Somewhere exotic and warm is always preferred but travel for me has always been a source of inspiration and learning about different cultures and people. An interesting B Corporation I’ve come across called Context offers an interesting spin on the walking tours offered in many cities around the world.
Context is a network of art history, cuisine, urban planning and environmental specialists who apart from their ‘day jobs’ as professors and researchers, design walking seminars for small groups of “intellectually curious travellers.” Each walking seminar’s goal is to create a connection between the traveller and city through an intimate, participatory experience, to build a sincere appreciation for the city.
With over 200 scholars as docents in the network leading walks in Vienna, New York, Shanghai and beyond, Context has brought together a group of knowledgable, passionate local experts to share their city and cultural heritage with travellers.
Modelling their Sustainable Travel Program partly on the National Geographic Society’s Geotourism program – “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents… (and) that destinations should remain unspoiled for future generations—while allowing for enhancement that protects the character of the locale,” Context’s sustainable program has three main components:
- Reducing and mitigating the environmental footprint of their office and their programs; ie: using recycled goods in offices, offering seminars as walking tours, participating in a carbon-offset program
- Controlling the social and economic impact of their programs; ie: educating travellers of their role as “responsible visitors”, helping travellers support small local businesses
- Giving back to the cities where they operate; ie: donating part of profits to the Context Foundation for Sustainable Travel and encouraging clients to donate as well
If you want to do your part in travelling sustainably and you’re itching to learn the true ins and outs of your next travel destination, check out if Context has walking seminars in the cities you’ll be visiting here.
Thank you Context for making our world wonderful.
