Working Farm Cultivates Change in At-Risk Kids

Growing up, I don’t think I ever truly flourished in a traditional classroom setting. Maybe it was too structured or perhaps I was just not interested in math or science, luckily though, I did overall like school. Vulnerable kids, however, who grow up in challenging environments, sometimes need to be reengaged with education, and that’s where Jamie’s Farm comes in.

With the goal to renew an interest in school for children so they can fulfil their educational and wider social potential, Jamie’s Farm provides a combination of ‘farming, family and therapy’ through short stay residential programs. The working farm, started by teacher Jamie Feilden during school holidays and weekends, is a catalyst for change for children who feel lost attending large secondary schools.

From helping prepare meals, rearing livestock,  helping grow seasonal vegetables, daily group work and one to one activities with trained staff, the children build self-esteem, form positive relationships and develop productive behaviours that will transfer beyond their stay at the farm. Encouraged to reflect on their behaviours and the impact on themselves and others, Jamie’s Farm, through their professional staff, offers a safe place for the children to open up, learn strategies for redirecting negative response mechanisms and work towards their personal goals.

Since the charity was established in 2009, more than 1000 children have participated in this school intervention program. “Over 80% of children have fewer behavioural incidents, and 68% are no longer at risk of exclusion a year after their first visit.”
